I haven't tried this yet, but it looks promising. If you decide to implement this, drop me a line and let me know how it worked out.

I evaluate many tools to help me get things done. Most don't make the cut. Here are some of the key tools I currently use and recommend:
I am technology consultant and eProductivity specialist and I 've been working Lotus Notes since 1993
My story in action management began in the mid 1980's when I received a contract to teach a course on systems analysis and design methodologies for the Navy

I didn't do the whole setup, only created the account documents and a separate location document, works quite well.
What I don't like about the pop3 retrieval with the standard mail template is that the timestamp of the email is not correct, meaning it shows when the email got downloaded (delivered) but not when you've actually received it. But that's what we've got the designer for :) You only need to change two entries and the received date is shown.

FYI: Here is the article I posted way back in 2004 giving the instructions for configuring Notes 6.5.2 for GMail. There are lots of comments from other folks sharing their experiences with various Notes client versions.

I have used Notes for my pop3 client since Dec 4th 1998. I have mail going back that far. As Andreas pointed out you need to change date column to [@If(PostedDate != ""; PostedDate; DeliveredDate != ""; DeliveredDate; @Created)] on view and folders for the sent date to appear. Double right click to close windows doesn't work on html emails. The POP3ClientDebug=1 notes.ini setting gives much greater detail in the log file if you are having problems. Leaving mail on the pop3 server will create very long replication times after 200 emails are stored and sometimes if you delete mail locally it will lose the marker you downloaded and download again. But if you send a calendar entries to a user in notes or another person using pop3 on notes it works same a notes mail.

I have been using this for years, however when possible I switch to using imap i/o pop - because of folders etc. If I am not mistaken gmail allows imap access as well. I Don't get much mail there so I do not bother with setting up my Notes client to connect to gmail at this time.
