From time to time, clients ask me if I know if a way to Hot Sync Lotus Notes on the Mac with a Palm or Treo SmartPhone. I'm a big fan of CommonTime's mNotes or iAnywhere for synching Notes and PDAs/SmartPhones but, as far as I know, none of these products support Mac. In fact, I'm not aware of any proven sync tools for Mac and Treo. I also question the future for the Palm OS. Most exciting development is in the Windows Mobile arena, with promises from Apple with their iPhone dev kit. (I expect to know more on that this summer.)

Usually for my Mac users, I set them up with a wireless sync tool that allows them to sync directly to their Domino Server with no need for sync software at the client.  This way, they can run around with a Treo that's always in Sync and it does not matter if they are PC or Mac based - the beauty of Notes.

I'd like to ask an Notes for Mac users out there if and how they are synching their SmartPhone/PDA with Notes.

I suppose this brings up the bigger point of the need for suitable sync tools between the Mac and not just the Treo but any PDA or SmartPhone. I wonder how long it will be before a major sync tool vendor embraces the Mac to provide quality sync between Lotus Notes on the Mac and any number of mobile devices, e.g. Treo, Palm, Blackberry, etc..

Does anyone know of a Notes-to-Treo conduit for Mac?

Cadenza/mNotes can be installed on the server as well as on the client. I think you are restricted to a Win32 server rather than the vastly superior Linux server, but at least you can sync databases without worrying about the client.

We did this for a long time before we moved over to using Blackberries.

Gareth, you are correct, mNotes/mSuite will run on a Win32 platform. That is what I will continue to recommend for my Mac clients.

Eric - thanks for bringing up this topic. Back in October 2006 there was a reply to my post on the Notes forum,

{ Link }

, which said Commontime was about to release a version of mNotes with Mac support. I wrote to Commontime and they said January 2007 was the target for release. All I can figure is that Notes on Mac synchronizing with PDA is either/both 1) small market, 2) thorny development project.

Eric - here's the latest reply from Commontime regarding their plans for Mac support:

"I have not heard any expected dates for supporting Mac . Our teams are

focused on the release of our new mSuite5 and working to support the iPhone

at the present time. I wouldn't expect to see a solution for Mac from CT

until sometime in 2009."

There seem to be some solutions out there that will allow a Treo to sync with a Mac (iCal and Address Book - let's forget about e-mail or anything else at the moment...)

So the real question is, is there anything out there that can, on the Mac platform, get Address and Contacts info into/outof Notes?

If we can do that, then it's just some data massage to get it to iCal and Address book.

I'm not aware of anything for the Mac platform that will do this. If you use a server-based solution, then it won;t matter if you use a Mac as your desktop client.
